A photo of Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning soaking his injured ankle in a cold tub while wearing his helmet and looking at an iPad has been making its way around the interwebs the past day or so, but as with everything Manning does, while it may appear strange and confusing at the onset — like his line calls during games — once it is explained it makes perfect sense.
Apparently, while odd, the photograph, first seen during a CBS broadcast of a Broncos game, demonstrates Manning’s dedication to preparation, and it doesn’t matter where he is or what he is doing, he is always most focused on readying himself for the next game, even if he has to multitask to do so.
The photo explained, via DenverBroncos.com:
Earlier this season, Manning and tight end Julius Thomas found themselves in the training room instead of practice on a Wednesday.
Not wanting to miss out on mental reps, Manning took matters into his own hands.
With his injured ankle in the cold tub, the quarterback kept his helmet on to listen to the play calls from Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase, who was on the practice field. Simultaneously, he watched game tape on his iPad.
“He heard the calls, he’d repeat them to Julius and they were kind of – it was a way for them to take two hours and stay in the game plan,” explained Gase, who laughed that he couldn’t believe the photo made it onto CBS’ broadcast last week.
Yeah, makes sense, right? And it’s hard to argue with anything Manning does given the tremendous amount of success he has enjoyed this season, his entire career, actually.
Although it would be far more amusing if there was a different reason behind Manning strapping on his helmet in odd situations, like he does it all the time, just to keep his mind on the game.
Eating dinner? Wearing the helmet. Taking a shower? Wearing the helmet. Watching TV? You better believe he’s wearing that helmet. In bed with his wife? Wearing … nah, not going there. It conjures up images that are size far too disturbing.
Although if Manning did in fact wear his helmet constantly, it would explain why every time he removes the dang thing he has that ginormous red splotch on his forehead.
Seriously. What’s up with that? Other quarterbacks rarely are seen with it, so what gives? Does Manning simply have a ginormous cranial capacity that cannot be contained by a standard football helmet or something?
